EQUITY, INCLUSION, & DECOLONIZATION

At QCIC, equity is at the core of our mission, forming the foundation for true inclusion and decolonization. This article outlines our commitment to prioritizing Equity, Inclusion, and Decolonization (EID) as essential principles for creating systemic change. We believe that genuine inclusion can only occur when equity is at the forefront, and we actively work to dismantle the structures of exclusion that have historically marginalized communities.

An integral part of our equity-first model is our focus on anti-Black racism, recognizing it as a pervasive issue not just in white communities but also within Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities. We place the "B" (Black) first because anti-Black racism is deeply entrenched and manifests in both overt and subtle ways across society. We acknowledge that racism, internalized oppression, and colourism (the preference for lighter skin tones) within BIPOC communities further perpetuate inequality and divisions. These forms of discrimination are rooted in the same systems that prioritize whiteness and power.

QCIC’s approach to equity is rooted in a commitment to not just awareness, but action. By confronting anti-Black racism head-on, we recognize that decolonization and equity require the collective effort of all communities — Black, Indigenous, POC, and White. We believe that in order for true justice to occur, it is essential that all identities confront and actively challenge the systems that perpetuate harm and inequality.

Our equity-first model promotes structural, sustainable inclusion that extends beyond tokenism. We foster a diverse environment that invites all voices to participate equally, rejecting any notion of “acceptable” or “preferred” identities based on privilege. Through the principles of fair share, care for people, and care for the planet, we ensure the equitable distribution of resources, power, and opportunities. This creates a foundation for sustainable inclusion where no one is left behind.

At QCIC, we are dedicated to creating spaces for healing, empowerment, and growth for those affected by systemic injustice. Our work is informed by permaculture ethics, emphasizing interconnectedness and sustainability. By prioritizing equity, we ensure that diversity and inclusion arise organically, creating a true culture of belonging and justice for all. This article serves as a reflection of QCIC's ongoing commitment to dismantling oppressive systems and building a future where every individual has the opportunity to thrive.
